Good morning, Oregon City. Here's your local news at a glance for Tuesday, the 15th of April.

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Authorities reported that a call from a homeless camp alerted rescuers to a 20-year-old inexperienced kayaker who struggled against the current and went over Willamette Falls Saturday night—his blue kayak was later found 7.5 miles downstream at Elk Rock Island as search crews continue to look for him.  KATU

CRIME NEWS

  • Former Dave’s Killer Bread employee Cody James Denewith was sentenced to over 27 years in jail Monday for fatally shooting his former co-worker Nathan Dean Anderson—he acted out of jealousy after believing Anderson had been with his girlfriend.  KPTV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Today the Senate passed Senate Bill 1016, which bans trash bags for transporting foster children's personal belongings and requires the use of durable carriers (duffel bags, suitcases, or rigid containers); the bipartisan measure passed 25 to 3 and now moves to the House for further action.  KATU
  • A group of lawmakers requested a federal fishery resource disaster declaration for the 2024 Oregon Troll Salmon Fishery after climate change, drought and shifting ocean conditions led to lower returns. They said the move — which aims to secure needed federal funding — will help ease economic troubles for local fisheries as summer Chinook targets may not be met.  KPTV
  • Oregon state leaders introduced new guidance to protect students from discrimination and bullying based on race, national origin and immigration status. The guidance, developed by the Oregon Department of Education and Bureau of Labor and Industries, adheres to state and federal protections and will remain enforceable even if federal rules change.  KATU
