What is Kundalini Yoga?

Kundalini Yoga is often called the "yoga of awareness." Most styles of yoga focus on the physical body, but this fast-acting practice works directly with the mind and nervous system, using them as a tool for inner truth and spiritual growth. Its roots go back to concepts described in the Upanishads as early as the 5th century BC. Practitioners often describe it as a Raj Yoga, weaving all eight traditional limbs of yoga into one practice.

Kundalini refers to a coiled energy said to sit at the base of the spine. Through Kriyas (sequences of breathwork, movement, mantra, and meditation), this practice aims to move that energy upward, bringing greater clarity, presence, and self-understanding. Research has also linked the practice to lower blood pressure, lower heart rate, and improvements in mood, memory, and cognitive function.

Yogi Bhajan, a controversial figure, brought these teachings West in the late 1960s. The lineage is deeply tied to Sikh Dharma, honored through Gurbani mantras and stories of self-empowerment, though Kundalini Yoga itself is not a religion and doesn't discriminate in any way. It was designed for householders: people with jobs, families, and real responsibilities.

Kundalini Yoga is a challenging, fun, and energizing practice. Push past your perceived limitations and Be You!
